you can't go wrong either way. 'hail, hail' is classic pearl jam. incredible riff by stone, ed sounds great, great lyrics. the performance on letterman always stands out.
release is the other side of classic pearl jam. a simple riff and three chords along with EVs voice drops an emotional bomb on you. this is part of why i think eddie vedder is as good a rock n roll singer as there's ever been. the way he builds his delivery through the song, and slowly introduces the 'release me' lyric, until it explodes at the end into him just howling is incredible. i know there's singers with more range or whatever the gauge to judge singers is, but what eddie vedder does with his voice is moving. Release might be the best showcase of his voice.
the riff also has special meaning to me. it plays perfectly into 'needle and the damage done', which is maybe my favorite song to play. i can't remember the last time i played that neil young song w/o playing the riff to Release
