I was spending some time with Yield today, and Given To Fly is just one of those definitive Pearl Jam songs. Arguably their last one. That's not to say it's their best (or that that there haven't been better songs since or even on Yield), but it's such a great encapsulation of what made this band matter.

I really like the bones of Of the Girl, but I'm not sure it quite comes together. Stone, Ed and Jeff are doing great stuff, but Mike (unmemorable bluesy noodling) and Matt (stiff thumping) drag things down.

I would've thought this would be a closer match. For me, they're both on about the same level. Both wonderful songs from my two favorite Pearl Jam albums. "Given to Fly" might be my favorite of the band's anthemic songs. "Of the Girl" has a great smokey atmosphere that feels slightly exotic. It could honestly beat coin flip, but right now I'm feeling more like flying.
