I don’t know how much I buy that inexperience played a role in how good their early material was. Stone and Jeff had been writing for years and had already recorded two major label albums at that point (Mother Love Bone’s Apple and Temple of the Dog).

What it made me think of is Stone talking (maybe in SVT?) about how it was difficult adjustment to cede control of the songwriting as it’s his natural tendency to be more detail-oriented and ornate, whereas Ed has a much more direct, simple style.

Cornell wrote Temple of the Dog and most of those are open jams.

Look, they stated it and my point is: Its not all Ed and Matt camerons fault just because the last couple albums have been dull.

When you are young and dont really know what you are doing, you dont think as much. You dont analyze as much. You play and write with passion and a more organic approach.

They obviously caught lightning in a bottle once upon a time. We should be thankful for it.

For sure, five largely excellent albums is more than most bands manage.

I think they kind of broke the band by hiring Matt, sure. He’s a great drummer and songwriter, I’m just not convinced his style really plays to the band’s strengths.

I think you would still get Sirens, Can't Deny Me, and whatever else with Dave A, Jack Irons, or any other drummer these days.

Not sure why everyone likes to blame Ed or the drummer on why the band has declined in quality output. Matt cameron isn't the reason why these guys pick up their guitars and write the music they do these days.

Theyre just old, man. Things change. People lose their passion.

I’m not arguing that “alternative reality Pearl Jam without Matt Cameron” would have been a better band, only that the change in drummer marked the point where they stopped consistently making great music and I think those things aren’t totally disconnected.

Maybe that would have happened anyway but there’s no way of knowing.
