That hits my pearl jam sweet spot
I almost put that one, too. I just love the spilled like wine image. Hate that Ed's abandoned it live.
But yeah both of those bits are perfection and worthy of the all time list.
The juxtaposition between those artful verses and the clunky chorus on MFC has always frustrated me. I think it's one of their worst choruses, and everything else about that song is so good.

Oh that's interesting. I've never found the chorus to be clunky. It's all of a piece to me and works so well. It's seamless and consistent, I think.
Lyric wise Backspacer has a lot of that...Force of Nature, Gonna See My Friend, Just Breathe..The End! those are super powerful lyrics or at least have great lines....
and the best is Speed Of Sound...man, its just...it transports me to what he is saying...there is an overall feeling to it.

That's true, Speed of Sound is great at what you're talking about. And I know it's not maybe as widely held but I think Amongst the Waves excels there too. Say what you want, but the song oozes atmosphere and sense of place.
Yeah, I'm wrong. There is plenty of that on Backspacer.

Totally. Ed's pretty good like that.
Maybe that's part of why Backspacer doesn't work for me. There's not a ton of atmosphere. Not a lot of painting.
Though Force of Nature could arguably be the best song on the record in that regard and it's my least favorite. So I don't fucking know.
Force of Nature and Amongst the Waves are the two best on that - but there is an immediacy to most of the songs that doesn't create that space - and there are a few songs (that I like) that would benefit a bit more from the atmosphere. Speed of Sound is a great example. I like the oddly cacophonous noise in the song, but it's not great for exploring the ideas.

Oh, I was thinking atmosphere in the music. Lyrically I think that scene painting is there, but the music almost always hurries things along so you don't get to linger, Even songs like The End feel a bit rushed compared to its peers.
