The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
"with heavy breath, awakened regrets, back pages and days alone that could have been spent together but we were miles apart"
Goddamn, I love that line. It was that second verse that really made it click for me and propel it to top Pearl Jam for me.
Has it ever been stated who the song is about? I remember Ed being kinda vague about it before but it seems like he actually identified the person somewhere.
"Whatever the notions we laced in our prayers The man upstairs is used to all of this noise I'm through with screaming And echoes nobody hears it goes it goes it goes"
"How's our father supposed to be told?"
"Sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith Mine is mine and yours won't take its place Now, make your getaway"
"All the advantage this life's got on me Picture empty cup in the middle of the sea"
"He let himself scream, he let himself cry let himself reach the other side there was on christ, there was no cross just forgiveness, allowed himself accepted the past, then set it free"
"Can I get a reprieve? This gene pool's drownin' me"
"What the fuck is this world runnin' to?"
"I know I was born and I know that I'll die The in between is mine I am mine"

i think you are right, long road was about his teacher. i'm not sure if he's ever said who 'light years' is about.

At the 2000 Pinkpop performance, Ed says it was written for a Sony employee that he had befriended, Diane Mucus, who died in 1997.

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky, but why? Why can't it be mine?
Oh Dear Dad, can you see me now? I am myself, like you somehow
I'll swallow poison until I grow immune I'll scream my lungs out till it fills this room
Vacate is the word Vengeance has no place so near to her Cannot find the comfort in this world
Caught a bolt of lightning Cursed the day he let it go
Do you see the way that tree bends? Does it inspire?
I miss you already... I miss you always. I miss you already... I miss you all day.
One uninvited chromosome A blanket like the ozone
Half his life, a hand me down, wasted away He fills it up with the love of a girl
No matter how cold the winter There's a springtime ahead
These are just the first 10 to come to mind as I think of each album and I've run out of slots... and I just realized I skipped Yield... I'm not going to think about this too much more because it would be never ending. Fuck You, Stip!

Should be Diane Muus, not Mucus. Typing too fast on the phone...

I did think that was kind of an unfortunate name.

"two birds is what they'll see, getting lost upon their way"
That's another one for me.
Excellent choice, I like this one a lot too. I love the "clouds parting after the flood to reveal the heavens" feel of that moment in the song, with the drums dropping out and that organ droning in the background. Such a great song.
"A night bird is following you all the time" is another one I love.
This band should switch to letting the other band members write lyrics about birds, instead of Eddie writing lyrics about waves.
