March Madness 2021: Finals! Voting ends 8PM 4/13

Sun March 07, 2021 9:16 pm

Welcome to March Madness 2021, our first year of Gigaton eligibility and featuring a total of 39 songs making their March Madness debut!

We are going to run the tournament with no bye rounds, which means we need 256 Songs. You can read about how the songs were chosen below:
Spoiler: show
• There are 141 songs on the studio albums (if you count Master/Slave and Hummus).
• There are 31 songs on Lost Dogs.
• There are 56 original songs in the B-side/compilation album/substantial demo (with vocals and lyrics)/studio covers/live originals/one offs, and studio X-mas songs (the songs chosen may feel somewhat arbitrary. You’ll just have to make your peace with that…) category.
That leaves us with 28 more songs to get to 256. So this year we are including
• Hunger Strike (which features all 5 members of Pearl Jam)
• Into the Wild (11 songs)
• Ukulele Songs (12 songs if you don’t double count Can’t Keep and Sleeping By Myself and cut the interstitials Hey Fahkah and Waving Palms)
• Against the 70s (because it’s awesome)
• Felicity’s Surprise (because I’d hear about it if this wasn’t on the list and some of these other songs were)
• Better Days (since it feels like one of the more ‘significant’ Eddie solo songs)
• Matter of Time (since this is the most recent studio song from Eddie)
Which gets us to the magic 256 number. There could have easily been other songs chosen

-Rounds will last about 24 hours. Matches will generally go up around 8pm.

-Please vote in the poll in each individual open thread. The bracket is for tracking purposes.

-You are voting for whatever version of the song you want (live, studio, demo, alternate take. You can vote for Release. You can vote for Rodlease. Whatever plays in your head when you think of the song)

-Ties will lead to matches staying open one hour at a time. We will close out all other matches (so other matches cannot tie themselves up during overtime). Overtime hours may end up cutting into the time for the next days matches

-Voting Begins Tuesday, 3/9/21 at 8 PM EST. May the best song win!

-You can follow the bracket here

There is one glitch with the tournament. I inputted 256 songs but for some reason only 255 are seem to be showing. I have done this 4 times, and gone back and identified each song to see what was missing. I can't figure out what the issue is. So in the event we discover that a song is missing we will have a three song/two elimination match in the final round of whenever it is we realize a song is missing. If someone can figure it out before we start that would be great :)

Maybe that’s what’s causing his counting problem?

What's the rationale for including Into the Wild and Ukulele Songs in this?

Re: March Madness 2021: Madness begins 3/9 at 8PM est!

For the 256th song, I say include one of those rumored titles like "Cigarette Song" or "Navy Bean" -- I'd be interested in seeing how far a hypothetical, nonexistent Pearl Jam song could advance as a placeholder in a contest like this, and what qualities people would project on it when voting. I imagine some would refuse to vote for it on principle, but I could see others voting for it over any number of commonly disliked songs (i.e. much of Backspacer or Lightning Bolt) as a statement. Depending on matchups I could see it advancing at least two rounds.

Stip likes Eddie Vedder tunes.

Too true. Following this line of thinking, I'd've likely advanced Who Ever Said to the end of time without ever hearing a note.
