Being named Lightning Bolt, I expected this album to rock hard.
Wasn't this also the reason Riot Act "sucked" when it came out?
It seemed to me that because the album was lacking in any of the experimental hallmarks of the last couple albums, and fronted by Ed's beleaguered vocals, it somehow felt phoned in. Obviously that's not been the case for a while. But I remember more than one person saying to me something like "How long did this album take them, a week?"
I just remember so many people expecting it to RAWK simply because it was called Riot Act. And when it wasn't a full on thrasher, folks felt mislead and disappointed.
the first song was mid-tempo and featured an acoustic guitar and organ. Expectations IMMEDIATELY subverted!

I met a woman at a wedding last year who used to date Joseph Arthur.... it was really funny. She had some great stories. But she was blown away that I knew who he was.

Did she date him before or after he completely lost his mind?

I think the guy had a few meltdowns but yeah covid really fucked him up badly, and not because he had it, but because he became one of those paranoid losers.
Stuverud made a long post on fbook at the time saying he couldnt believe what he was saying.

Ha!
Way before. But I did ask her about him losing his mind.

I'm not sure we can blame abusing young women on Covid

I remember when LB came out I really liked it, but it might be the al I album that aged the most poorly for me. I never care for most of these songs live

a problem with shorter tours and a deep catalog is songs dont get the chance to develop live or build a following - i hope they dont give up on retrograde which will someday be what eddie wants if it has the chance

Now granted I love Lightning Bolt, but I liked having a number of the songs in previous rotation earlier. They got a refresh with the better sound quality, and it helped me contextualize and unpack the new songs sooner. I feel like everything got more time to marinate this way, even if it was at the expense of the newness of the overall album

No matter how much I try, I just can’t fully get on board with LB. It's both the production and the song-writing that spoil it for me. It might be at the bottom of my list

I listened to this album just now and had a fun time with it
I enjoyed everything until MFS; it's one of the most lyrically clumsy PJ songs there is (yeah, more than Getaway or MYM, both of which I enjoy to some degree)
LTRP didn't offend me; I don't love the chorus, but I like everything around it (especially the bridge and solo)
basically the same thoughts about Infallible, overproduced though it is; it has that Matt groove I like
I still really enjoy Swallowed Whole a lot; it's like a Counting Crows song
Pendulum is nice and doesn't belong here; Jeff knew this, bless his soul
I think SBM is a really nice cover of Ed and the Pearl Jams, the vocal glitch on "disaster" makes me LOL every time
my only issue with Future Days is the piano; it's a nice song otherwise, especially the bridge again (I think there's another glitch on "closer"); I have a real fondness for songs that sound like church songs but aren't (see Getaway, too, as well as the bridge of Swallowed... very churchy)
