This one climbed the ranks for me. Im surprised how much I still enjoy it and in fact enjoy it more now than when I first heard it. It’s catchy in a good way, and I love that it has some Yield sounding parts.
whoa, stop right there buddy

Its kinda incredible how this one grew up on me. I feel its such a cool song now, and i thought it was just mid par
Same here, it presents on the surface as a forgettable Eddie rocker, only you listen to it a few times and you end up not forgetting it.
There are fleeting moments during the verse when I find myself thinking it could be an early Elvis Costello/Attractions tune -- it has the kind of unhinged, half-melody-half-sneer that I would expect to find on a This Years Model B-side or something.
There is also a less fleeting moment in the chorus where it still very distinctly sounds like Huey Lewis and the News. And it just gets more fun every time.
you dont feel its similar to BRY? the bridge sounds like something from the Yield era.
I don't really hear "BRY," VG -- I mean, I can see where, if all Pearl Jam songs had to be shepherded into, say, 5 or 6 different categories, these two songs and some of those Trag listed would share a bucket, but it doesn't specifically remind me of it. The whole vibe and headspace of those No Code and Yield songs was just so different; I struggle to really hear any of it in the Gigaton material. To me, "Black Red and Yellow," "Leatherman," and "MFC" really do feel light and airy -- unburdened, and effortlessly nimble as a result. I think this song, while still anchored around Eddie's scrappy guitar playing, mixes in some piss and vinegar, some outwardly-directed snarl -- those other songs just don't go for that, despite some superficial similarities.
i get that, but how the bridge its builds, its just reminds me of BRY or Undone. Its more close to those songs than, let say Big Wave or Supersonic.

Top three are gold, Jerry, gold. Never Destination and Unemployable are just a touch behind. Habit and Blood are absolutely amazing if I’m in the right mood. Pendulum is one of the top 2 songs on that album, but it doesn’t come close to the top 7 here. TMW is ok. Pry, To is sorta cool, Unthought Known sucks.
What makes this song more interesting than the typical PJ Rocker™ is the journey it goes on when it typically would have ended.
On BS or LB, this track would have ended at about the 2:15 mark and that would have been that.
On Gigaton, just as you think it's gonna peter out, it starts that slow, slow build culminating in the GAPING MAW section. It builds into the crescendo and kicks back into the main riff. Then you get another high energy verse, followed by a reprise of an earlier verse (a recurring trick on the album) into the chorus one last time, followed by the Tom Petty finish.
That adventurous extra two minutes we get is what sets Gigaton apart.

Absolutely. I feel similarly about Who Ever Said.
yeah, and it's all these detours on all these songs that really makes it sound like a PJ album

You nailed it Evenslow. It feels like a part of their instinctual songwriting that O'Brien neutered.
I think it was the producer who said something about approaching the songwriting this time around in terms of building internal tension within the song, and then releasing it. That really does play to their most natural song craft instincts. Tracks like Daughter are built upon it.
