There are plenty of people who do incredible work 30+ years into their career. Actors, directors, chefs, authors. Musicians too, but they definitely tend to be solo artists.

REM called it quits after settling into a comforting familiarity and not feeling the fire. I wish they were still making music on occasion, or that I could see them live again

but they also put out Up and Reveal towards the end. PJ has done nothing that good in many years

this is hyperbolic. parts of those records are interesting at times but neither is a cohesive statement. i wouldn't use those as my argument for pearl jam is bad.

i agree Reveal is disconnected, but Up is very much a cohesive album to my ears.

I wish PJ could make something nearly as good as Accelerate or Collapse Into Now.

The John Prine record that just came out obliterates every Pearl Jam record from the last 20 years. And he's 80.

Haha I just made a similar comment about his live shows in the new albums thread

Yup.

Why? They play some shows, trot out the hits, play more deep cuts than the average band, do a few too many covers, and seem to have a fun time in short spurts while middle aged white douches like me get together with old friends and have a good time. A new album just means 6 more songs per show that aren’t from their best years or, quite frankly, mine.

Def Leppard, Journey, and Cheap Trick are coming through town together this summer. I cannot imagine people in the audience bitching that they don’t have the fire anymore. Christ, Pearl Jam is going on 30 years. No one in any occupation is killing it in year 27 of their job. Ed said it himself years ago - All that’s sacred comes from youth. He’s still the perfect captain for this old ship. And at least he stands at the front of the stage where people who paid to see him sing actually can.

I am 33 years into my career.

In my 25th year my average billings exceeded over half a billion
In my 28th year I brokered a deal worth $7.6 billion
In my 31st year I managed the merger of two trillion dollar companies

In Pearl Jam's 27th year they shat out Can't Deny Me

There is no excuse. Pearl Jam are the worst fucking piece of shit over the hill garbage band.

So you put all your value in money made. Seems like Pearl Jam is also still crushing it then.

Up is one of REM's best, Reveal is very good too, both certainly better than Pearl Jam's last couple records.

The kindest, most lenient view of both of those records still puts them in the bottom quarter of REM's output.

Albums that are better than Up/Reveal...

Chronic Town thru New Adventures
Accelerate
Collapse Into Now

If I'm being generous, I'd say maybe Green and Out of Time could be lowered to Up/Reveal level, but... nah, come on man.

And as far as the comparison to Pearl Jam goes, whatever. I'm not going to go to the mattresses for Backspacer/Lightning Bolt but S/T is way way better than Up/Reveal it's not even close.
