When Yield came out, you either knew you were locked in as a Pearl Jam fan for life, or you moved on to the next thing...

I’ve posted about this before, but the song Pilate embodied this for me. I love this record, of course. Half my friends suffered through me playing a song like Pilate and decided PJ was old news. On to the next thing. See ya, suckas!

Probably my favorite song we got in Missoula in '18. That and Fatal of course.

The chorus lyrics keep this from being a top tier Pearl Jam song. Everything else is really great

I absolutely love the verses and the bridge of this song, it's a shame that the chorus is awful. Here's my rendition of Jeff's bassline, gorgeous stuff from him.

I must be the only one who likes the chorus on this one.

You are not.

I love that “Black Red and Yellow”-esque stuff so much. I wish there was more of it in their catalog.

Also, this is one of the best bridges in the entire catalogue, musically, lyrically, and production-wise.

You were comparing Pilate and Black, Red and Yellow.

*the chorus of Pilate, and yes. They feel of a type to me...playful, non-anthemic guitar rock featuring weird lyrics, a barely-there melody, and an almost sarcastic drawl.

Ah, gotcha.

I had never thought of these types of Pearl Jam choruses this way, but I think your description nailed it.

Now I'm trying to think which other PJ songs fit that kind of mould...

That middle part in Never destination after the guitar solo is total Black, Red & Yellow to me.

As for Pilate, love it. It has some of my favorite lyrics:

Stunned by my own reflection
It's looking back, sees me too clearly
And I swore I'd never go there again
Not unlike a friend that politely drags you down, you down, you down

Good call on the ND bridge. Definitely has a BRY vibe!

Love those Pilate bridge lyrics as much as anything in the catalogue.

This song, man...

Nine times out of ten, I enjoy the bridge and it otherwise does nothing for me. But that tenth time, it just floors me and I think it’s one of the best things they’ve ever done.

Love this song. Top 3 moment of the Missoula '18 show.

I love "Pilate." I remember being a little disappointed with the studio version after the Self-Pollution Radio version, but it's still a treat, and I remember it being one of the criteria I used to purchase '00 boots back in the day.
