Great article.

Those guys are the real deal. I could read/hear them talk about the mid 80s Seattle scene, and music generally, all day.

It's kind of hilarious how everyone keeps ragging on Stone's taste in heavy metal:

Quote:
Shumway: I went to the Northwest School with Stone and Steve Turner. Stone was really into Iron Maiden and Kiss.

Turner: Stone was kind of a really sarcastic metal kid but we became friends.

Fairweather: Stone was younger than us and into some really bad metal, like King Diamond.

Turner: The other guys were getting turned on to more hard rock. Stone was definitely from that side. There was a definite Iron Maiden infatuation for a while, as well as Venom. These weren’t my favorite things.

Ament: Stone was really into UFO and Iron Maiden. I don’t know if any of us really ever embraced those bands at the time.

This is the first reference I’ve seen to Stone liking KISS. I knew Mike, Jeff and Matt likes them but not Stone.

How is it there’s not been a book written about the Seattle music scene from mid-80s to mid-90s? All we really get is scraps like this and books about some of the bands. A buddy is reading the Alice In Chains book right now and he says it isn’t written very well, but has a bit of the early history in it.

Gossard’s taste and experiences were vital to early Pearl Jam.

There's these two, which are well-regarded (I liked the Prato book more from memory, but YMMV):

Everybody Loves Our Town is a great read. It’s all/mostly oral history as well.

Awesome indeed!

It's funny that Stone was into metal at that time. He was basically in a band with punkheads but writing most of the music.
You could argue that Stone had most to do with inventing that grunge sound. More than Sg or the Melvins.
That song 'Come on Down' was released in 1985 and in my opinion the first 'grunge' song.

This one and Grunge is dead are great and they cover a lot of the early 80s Seattle scene.

yeah, Green River has a lot to do with that sound for sure. I think Soundgarden or Kim Thayil grabbed whataver they liked about Melvins or Green River and made it their own.

At this point, I think I’d rather have a full on Green River reunion than a Pearl Jam record. Fuck Ed.
