And if so ... when exactly?

I would argue no. Nirvana was more popular throughout the world 1991-1994.

PJ went through the whole Ticketmaster / difficulty touring normal venues thing...

And then Hootie & The Blowfish hit the scene in ‘95.

Ten outsold Nevermind in the US and worldwide. Vs. is the third best selling album from the two bands.

Nirvana was bigger internationally, Oasis was probably around that level at one point, and Metallica. PJ was mostly in the states.

That said, PJ maintained better internationally than they did in the US over time. Yield has sold something like 14% what Ten has, in the US. If you remove the US from the figures, though, its trend is closer to 1/4 what Ten sold.

Not disputing that Nirvana was big internationally, but around the time Vs. was released Pearl Jam was everywhere in Europe as well. Newspapers, tv, people talking, radio, fashion etc. Same could be said for Metallica and Guns N'Roses around those years.

I can't see how Nirvana could have been bigger than Pearl Jam in the fall of 1993. Even Kurt was stammering through interviews to explain why PJ was outperforming them in sales. Nirvana's Spring 1994 European tour was in 5- to 8,000-capacity venues, and I can't imagine PJ would have had any difficulty filling those.

But the honest answer is no. They could have been in 1994 had they been willing to keep their foot on the pedal.

I agree. They may or may not have been the biggest band in the world, but they were "bigger" than Nirvana from some time in '93 until mid-April '94.

The big outlier is U2, whose sales numbers are batshit insane for a band who have also been creative risk takers, but who everybody has always seemed to hate.

Here is Billboard’s best selling albums list from 2009, notorious at the time for being the most well-sourced and funded effort to compile real worldwide sales figures to date, but also for possibly inflating some figures (or, alternatively, capturing accurately numbers that territorial distributors had been previously understated in order to avoid royalty payments).

I forget what the story was there, but it was a regular discussion point. My memory is that some copywrite holder or something was transcribed instead of the recording artist, but this list is over 10 years old (in spite of what I wrote, I think it was actually from 2006?) so my memory is worthless.

Some enterprising individual could probably make a few bucks "reprinting" Tim Landen's "The Hits" for Record Store Day...

The funny thing is, as big as they were with Ten/Vs around the release of Vs, when Vitalogy came out, it almost seemed a little odd to my high school friends that I bought it on the day of the release. And it was not a huge deal everywhere, like Pearl Jam used to be. Before No Code came out, hardly anyone talked about it, and that was before hearing a single song. A year after Yield was released, it was almost like I had to defend Pearl Jam being my band, if it came up in a discussion. Of course Pearl Jam performing concerts was something else, then everyone wanted to go. And before the tragedy, they were certainly the talk of the festival at Roskilde in 2000. Which you could also see, since everyone turned up for the concert.

But as for being so big that girls that listen to pop records wore their clothes, read about them in magazines, and everyone knew their songs, I think it passed sometime after Vs. was released.

i think PJ had a wider appeal than Nirvana. that has nothing to do with album sales though. Nirvana was a young person's band, but PJ resonated with people who grew up with Zeppelin, the Stones, the Who, etc.

Holy fuck dude. It was like "Thriller" that year. Like 5 or 6 huge hit singles on it or some shit, and videos that stuck in your craw. She was shoving fistfulls of money up her filthy vagina.
