I used to think this song was great live, and it still is, but lately I've realized that this is one of those songs where the studio version blows all live performances out of the water.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve never heard a single live version that I like better than the studio. Same for Sleight of Hand.

Did they play it at that Chicago '98 show that MJD keeps posting? Might want to reserve judgment if so.
