The Letterman performance represented the peak of my fandom.
True story:
I had a lady friend over and we were watching that special, commercial-free episode of Letterman. Well, things had advanced to the point of coitus and then Hail, Hail started. Coitus pausus. Coitus resumed after Hail, Hail was finished.

Almost certainly my favorite late night performance by the band...the whole performance is a thing of beauty but my god the delivery on those last few lines...chills to this day when i watch it.
I find it on my run in a race that can't be won, yeah... All hail the lucky ones, I refer to those in love, yeah... If you're my only one...so good, you only one... I want to be your one...enough, you won...your one...your hun...

My favorite aspect of the late night appearance was the whole vibe: Ed in the suit, Stone in his orange outfit, Jack in the coveralls, the whole thing feeling very laid back and lived in.
If I'm ranking US PJ TV appearances, for top five I'm going:
Animal @ MTV Awards Grievance on Late Show Not For You on SNL Hail Hail Severed Hand on SNL

Nobody is picking Alive on SNL? That performance was everything to teenage me.
Rearviewmirror on SNL was right at the top for me. Hail Hail due to performance and the fact that it had felt like an eternity since we'd seen the band on tv.

Fuck. That's a good line. Maybe one of ed's best.
Damn.
Agreed.
Charleston ‘96, my second PJ show, the first being the night before in Charlotte. I’m with two very good friends at the time. One of them had a band aid on his hand and at that I went to grab his hand. He gave me a quick “wtf are you doing?” look, as it came right after “are you woman enough to be my man” before I turned it so that he could see the band aid, at which point we did a quick fist bump to the beat. Well it was cool in the moment.
