Feeling very blessed to be attending four shows this year. Maybe I can manage to hear all of these live.

Going through a difficult relationship, partners mental state, having a son, generally being in quite an emotional state, but man this album really hits me. Loads of great lyrics. Wreckage, scared of fear, upper hand, something special, setting sun. Been a long time (maybe hearing Black) since I’ve genuinely felt close to tears because of the music.

Tonight is the night. Can't wait to listen to the full album.

It's comforting to have a favorite band for so long that for 30+ years has given you some great music.

It would be cool if this thing had a hidden track.

I'm going to play this for The Raz tonight. I already know she thinks Dark Matter and Running are too much, but I have a feeling she'll love at least a couple of these, probably mostly Wreckage and Something Special. Will keep you updated.

Definitely, will be fun to finally get a chance to hear it after so much buildup and anticipation.

I think these are simultaneously some of the best and worst lyrics on a Pearl Jam album.

They are blunt, not that poetic, sometimes trite, straightforward, etc. Taken on an individual level they don’t often wow or come across as a bit weak. On some songs that I liked on first listen they weakened when reading the lyrics on second listen.

But they also come across as honest, raw, and personal. And cohesive across the album for whatever Eddie is trying to express. And in that way I think they are actually some of his strongest. It definitely gives you the feeling the album is about something.

I can see where you're coming from. It may not be the lyrical "3-D chess", as Ed called it, of Avocado, but...what I would say is this...The lyrical earnestness that has been a hallmark of his writing since day one has quite possibly never been better deployed than it has for this set of songs. They're well suited for that level of emotional vulnerability.

I was a little disappointed with some of these lyrics when I was at the cinema, but finding out that the themes feel apparently so raw and real, and they're stretched across the album, that approach starts to make sense (even Something Special is lifted by the album context); and poetry doesn't have to be a complex puzzle, there are plenty of very simple but beautiful lines here

Absolutely. I can be equally fascinated by more poetic, complex lyrics and more direct sentiments, but, for me, the artistry is ultimately about the honest expression of the person I'm listening to....That could run the gambit, from the most eye-rollingly pretentious English prog to Keith Morris and the Circle Jerks writing songs about cum stains on their jeans. I don't care...love it all.

In this particular case, speaking of English Prog, the themes that weave the album together do so in such a way as to make this, dare I say it? A concept album? It sure sounds like it, to me.
Title takes on a much deeper and complex meaning, in that context, doesn't it?

Upper Hand is basically a prog song to me

I managed to sort the VPN to get onto Australian Qobuz and purchased the hi-res download.

My evening is sorted!

I still keep getting "Oops! VPNs not allowed".

I had to use my laptop.
I signed up for a free trial of Norton Secure VPN and downloaded the app onto my computer, turned on Split Tunnel in Settings, turned Australia VPN on.

Then I searched for Quobuz Australia on Google, signed in with an email and it let me buy the album.

Agreed. This album is like having my best friend move away 25 years ago. We call/write, and are able to enjoy the relationship (sometimes immensely), but I never thought I would actually see him again and experience what made the original relationship so special.

And then he just walked into the room.

Im basically needing more music from this sessions and this band's state of mind. I havent felt that since Yield/Binaural, where Im thirsty of every piece of sound they made. Bring on the outtakes!

And now I rub my eyes
For he has returned
Seems my preconceptions are
What should have been burned
For he still smiles
And he's still strong
Nothing's changed
But the surrounding bullshit
That has grown
And now he's home and we're laughing
Like we always did
My same old, same old friend

I’m sure Mike will reference an EP in the next few weeks and we’ll all get excited and then nothing will come it

Probably. If ever there was a need for an EP, it's now.

So being a good dad I managed to at least grab a leak of Fortnight by Taylor Swift and Post Malone for my girls to hear after school...

First, it sounds like a Lana Del Rey cover. Second, I kinda like it. And third, and the reason for this silly post, is that it also sounds compressed as hell and is hard to listen to at any decent volume...I doubt the young kids with young ears will mind...
