Yeah admittedly not a fan of this one...but if i take a glass half full approach i'm glad that it at least hints at this album being a departure from the kinds of songs we'd get on a Pearl Jam album. Still can't wait to hear the whole thing.

I have a soft spot for schmaltzy Ed (still like future days) but it works better for me when it’s not a full band number. The haves/have not lyrics aren’t quite as clever an inversion as it’s needs to be for this to fully work, and it is taking an important colloquial class distinction and making it into something cutsey and personal, which feels a bit dismissive.
Hard left turn on the lyrics in these first two songs, and a bit surprising given how generally excellent the writing on gigaton is

The Haves sounds like the intro song to a primetime family dramedy circa 1988. Just picture "A Vin Di Bona Production" scrolling on the screen and the whole things makes perfect sense.

the journey from the acerbic, slight Soon Forget -- which covers similar thematic territory -- to the ornately composed The Haves is kind of a microcosm Ed's entire songwriting evolution over the last 20 years
