All 5 of the PJ guys are really solid to great artists. It's a great situation when a band has 5 guys who are capable of doing what they each do and I think having 5 people who can shoulder the weight is key to why albums like Yield, Binaural and Riot Act represent era of high creativity for the band instead of lulls. I hope this stuff sends them off in some cool places in the future together as a band.
I don't really find it surprising. This album appears to be his foray into focusing mostly on guitar and vocals. The idea of a solo album is to create something that you have full control over, and get out ideas that you don't want bastardized through band democracy and compromise.
I think it would take some balls to play drums on a drummer's solo album.

It's no wonder he hasn't brought anything to the band since The Fixer if THIS is what he hears in his head vs. what the band turns it into. (And I actually like The Fixer.)
