Post subject:  Furnace Issues

My home furnace's pilot light is fueled by propane. When the heat turns on, the pilot light is lit, and then the blower turns on, and that is what presumably provides the heat to my home. Well, the other evening when it was really cold, I noticed the heat coming through the vents was not hot, but rather like room temperature. I opened the furnace cover and looked in the looking hole and noticed that while the furnace was running and blowing air all over the place, there was no pilot light. When I turn off the furnace and the propane feed, then turn them back on, the pilot light is lit, and then it's working again. But sometimes when I try this, the pilot light is lit, and then the blower turns on, and then the light goes out. Is it possible that the furnace only sometimes needs the pilot light to provide a certain amount of heat? What is going on here? Should I call a guy?

I have no idea but I really hope your house does not blow up. Gas is scary

I'm also irrationally afraid of my propane. Thanks for your prayers.

I got the cover off, somehow; it was tough. And cleaned the floor 'neath the pilot light of like ash and dirt stuff. And tried to get the cover all the way on, and now it's slightly ajar on top. Turned the gas feed and then the blower switch on, and tested it, and it worked. The air is fully hot again. And then I closed the cover and walked away and ever since it's been working fine. Very warm air; pilot light is staying on. I'm glad I'm not dead. (Yes Lenny, this is a metaphor).
