It seems like more and more, Uber drivers are relying on their glitchy GPS to a fault. I’m not totally convinced that ride sharing GPS apps aren’t purposely getting it wrong for profit.

WTF did contract drivers do before GPS? Were cabbies just that in tune with city maps? More to the point -- are today’s drivers so coddled by tech that they don’t think a knowledge of the city map is worth a damn?

please calm down

This current Uber driver is asking me questions that I couldn’t possibly have the answer to.

*points to apartments along the route* “Do you know how many people live in those apartments?”

*Points to road construction* “What day will this be finished?”

Rare pure, no bones about it 5-Star ride last night. This guy couldn’t have been older than 23 and rolled up smelling like weed. He turned around to shake my hand and introduce himself and I thought “here we go...”

Then I noticed he had The Sciences on and I said something like “man, this album’s just what I need right now.” He remarked that I was the first person to recognize it, then switched to a new Sleep track I’d never heard. Then he shut the fuck up and we both just...jammed. Genuine human connection. Exactly what I needed after a brutal night closing down the bar.

I have taken an Uber probably 10 times or less in my life and I have no stories to tell.

Sorry.

“Are you from Houston?”
“What part?”
“What high school did you go to?”
“Did you play sports there?”
“Do you like sports?”

I’m not exaggerating. One question after another. Rapid fire.

I had one last year that explained to me why he couldn't go back to Iraq due to his desertion of the army. He fled here and then brought his wife over to live with him. She, according to my recollection of what he told me, changed in America and began having sex with everyone. (I believe that is the exact phrasing).

I question this story for two reasons:

1- An Iraqi military defector (at least I would hope) would have a hard time getting in the situation where he could become my short term chauffeur. Maybe he was one of the few true refugees that were here legally, but then again, maybe not.

2- He did not mention kids, and i got the impression he didn't have any, yet somehow I think that the odds would favor that he did.

None of it seemed unusual until I exited the vehicle, however. Weird.

My driver just had an Asian person cut him off, and he proceeded to say "ricers" are the worst drivers.

:/

We have “Ricer Wednesdays” here once a month. Showcase of souped up Hondas and Toyotas drag racing downtown. Everyone pops hoods and hangs out at the Rice Box food truck when they’re finished racing. True story.

within the next ten years, there won't be human uber drivers

BUT

maybe by then prostitution will be legal

in which case, their jobs will be transitioned to Uber fluffers while the robot car drives you places

Well I had a super awkward and embarrassing ride last night.

I get in the car and verify the driver’s name, at least I thought I did...
He verifies mine, or at least he thought he did....

I proceed to recommend a better route when I see that his GPS is being wonky, or at least I thought it was...

As the ride went on and the GPS increasingly wanted to backtrack, we both got fed up with each other. Finally he requested to see my app. It was then that we realized the mistake. Not only wrong car, but wrong service entirely, as he was a LYFT driver.

I tipped him in cash and exited his car a mile from my home, tail between legs, left to hail an actual Uber.

I appreciate that post on a couple of levels. Knowing what you've shared about that relationship and having gone through something similar myself several years ago, namely.

Got a former Afghan translator as an Uber driver tonight. Lives in the exurbs and works M-Th Ubering. Apparently does not care for the drunk weekend crowd.

This is the second former translator (first was from Iraq) that I've had for an Uber driver. I guess its nice to know that some of those guys got the visa they were promised. Nothing wrong with Ubering, but I do wonder why they aren't working at the language school in Monterrey training Americans to speak Arabic and Pashtun(?) respectively.

Does anyone know anything about how the DOD or state department tries to integrate these guys?
