ITT, we talk about all things cars. Buying them, fixing them, cleaning them, car parts, USA cars vs. Foreign cars, and whatever car related stuff you know, care to talk about, debate, etc...

So, I moved to the burbs in the DC area. Gotta get car number two. My wife and I have shared one car for 7 years, but with the daycare schedule and longer commutes, it's time to get a second.

Don't know if I should buy or lease. Never done the latter, has RM? If I buy, I really don't want to go over 15k. So that puts me in the range of like used Honda Civics, or maybe even a new Ford Focus or Chevy Cruze. None are my top cars, but I want low milage, good fuel economy, room for a car seat, and something not totally fugly.

If those were your requirements RM, what would you get?

I love my CR-V. 165,000 miles and counting. My wife's Odyssey has 180,000 miles. #honda4life

The Civic is a strong contender. I don't mind the Cruze either. I don't really like the name, but that is true of most cars, but it gets solid ratings. They have a manual transmission option. That would be fun to go back to a stick shift. Haven't had one since college. I see Civics have a manual option too. I think the Civic and Cruze may be my top two choices.

Has anyone owned either? If so, thoughts?

Not a bad option, and can be lower monthly payments as well. Any tips for leasing?

Honda and Toyota are both very well-built low-maintenance machines. I wouldn't own a Ford or anything German.

I would look for a good deal on a lease trade in. Wife just got a fully loaded 2012 Honda Accord in the price range you mentioned.

I hate leases because it's like paying rent and being left with nothing at the end, often times with a large down payment too.then you have to worry the entire time about something happening to it or how many miles you drive it.

New cars lose so much value the second you drive off the lot.

But with a lease return, you can get a car that was only driven about 30-40k miles, takes advantage of loss if value, and is still eligible for an extended warranty that lasts the life of your auto loan.

That's my take

me too

my cruze is alright...i have about 55k on it and have only had a few minor issues, which were covered by the warranty

the back isn't overly spacey, so i'm not sure how easy getting a car seat in and out would be

im still not sure what i want to buy. i keep driving stuff and being paranoid that the car is making noise it shouldnt be. i drove a honda fit the other day. a very noisy car. also the guy is selling it after only having it 6 months, but its a low price and has low mileage. its also rebuilt which freaks me out. not sure how concerned i should be about rebuilts. anyway i have a civic with low gas mileage i plan to look at in the next day or two.
