Didn't see a thread for this.

There's a very strong possibility that my wife and I are going to be moving to Salt Lake City soon. I'm excited for the change of scenery (and getting the fuck out of Illinois), though I am mildly concerned about all the Mormon shit. But for the most part, it looks like a really nice place to live. Anyone ever lived in Utah? How'd you like it?

You don't drink so you'll be fine. It's a beautiful city.

I was being halfway facetious, though I completely understand the feeling. I do like the pace of life here -- I'm not cut out for life in a big city, but I'm too fond of having civilization nearby to live in the country, and Peoria splits the difference pretty well. Much of the town I grew up in has been left behind in disrepair as it has developed northward, which has been very sad to watch, and I do wish the city had richer culture and better career opportunities, but for as boring as it sometimes gets, it does feel like home. We have a good support structure here, and I want our kids to grow up really knowing their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

The western US is stunning, though -- I traveled to San Diego by train (through CO, NM, and AZ) not long ago, and around every corner is a different natural wonder. I can see why it would be an attractive place to live. And there are certainly things that suck hard about IL, like the winters. And the roads.

I did not know you lived in SLC. I'll be damned. The west is the best, bro's. Move there. Their beer is fantastic.

As someone who has lived around Mormons for more than 15 years, I'd probably agree. But it's complicated.
We are "friendly" with several people who are Mormons, but we aren't friends with them. That mostly has to do with their standoffish behavior when they discover we are nonbelievers. This becomes increasingly frustrating when it involves our kids and their mormon friends. Numerous times our kids have made Mormons friends only to have them distance themselves when their parents find out we aren't Mormons. This obviously doesn't apply to every Mormon and, in fact, my eldest daughter's best friend is Mormon.
But I'd say in general, you are correct, they are pleasant people.

I have leftist poet friends who fucking love it there. Beautiful scenery, apparently a strong arts community, not too much Mormonism. For me, I love living out west, too (Las Vegas). There's so much natural wonder (i.e. opposite of the midwest).
