I went to the beach for the first time this summer. The water was goddamn freezing. I did not wear a jacket and tie to the beach.

The water was freezing when I was at Acadia a few weekends ago. But after climbing a mountain I was so hot I walked to the end of the dock on our campsite and just plunged right in. It was terrible and amazing at the same time.

I also did not wear a jacket and tie.

The first time in the water was so refreshing. I acclimated to the cold easily enough and had some fun times with some great waves. The second time, however, I stayed in far too long. My fingers and toes were numb and I had mad shivers. Laying on the beach in direct sun for over an hour still didn't completely warm me up.

I wished I had a jacket.

Do most guys not button the top button when they're wearing a tie? Or is this one of those "it was late in the date so I loosened up a bit" sort of things?

Because I would love to stop buttoning my top button when I wear a tie, but I feel that I need permission from society first.

No one I know (I work in a business where ties are required) buttons their top button at any point during the day/night.

This is all new to me. I wonder if it is more "traditional" because I am in the south, but generally everyone who wears a proper suit buttons the top button. It is that way when I travel too, with businessmen wearing suits.

Oh yeah, I see plenty of others button all the way. But most people I know in my industry don't. They also don't loosen their ties too much, either. The tie is high and tight but the top button is left open. If that makes sense.

i'm sure it boils down to the industry you are working in

aw huh

It's also become a bit of a "class" or wealth thing around NYC, too. Normal people don't button all the way up. The white collar criminals and bros trying to impress someone (those guys that just cashed their first $200,000 check) stay buttoned all the way up. The uber-rich, super elites don't even wear a tie. Just $20,000 shirts and $100,000 suits.

My shit's from Old Navy and was threadbare five years ago. No one should take fashion advice from me.
