Wife has two relatively small diamond pendant necklaces. Both were given to her by ex-boyfriends like 10 years ago. They are nice enough but she doesn't wear them for this reason (her choice, not mine - it wouldn't bother me).

She has taken them in to jewelry stores to see how much they're worth to put toward a new necklace.

Let's say I have decided to spend $500 on a new necklace. And let's say the two she has are worth $200 combined.

Would it be ok if I "stole" her two and put them toward a new one thus getting her a $700 piece as opposed to $500?

The reason she never traded them in yet is because she'd still have to spend a lot more than what they're worth to get something new that she really likes.

I would do that, for sure.

To be on the safe side, don't.

I don't know your wife. Sometimes people claim to do something for one reason, while the real reason might be something else. Emotions, etc. You know. Woman stuff.

Have the diamonds removed and instead of putting them in a new necklace, drop them in a Salvation Army bucket at your local grocery store.

The best idea is the remove diamonds and have them inserted into a new beefed up necklace.

Place the old necklaces on the cat, wear the cat as the new necklace.

I wouldn't touch her existing jewellery. I'd either talk to her about it (the surprise factor is lost but then she would get something she actually liked. Or alternatively just go with the $500 surprise piece and suggest she sell the others to buy some earings or some shoes.

Communication is the key.
