Not necessarily, although I guess it depends what you mean by learning from it. It can be something traumatic that you have trouble moving on from. Perhaps learning to move on is what you need to learn.

When the past haunts you it means you have something to learn from it. The longer you go down the wrong path the more problems you will develop. Then you will have to retroactively undo these problems until you get to the deepest problems. All my life I've been trying to change because I know there are problems. And I never stopped thinking about my teenage years. I finally got the message in the last couple days. I realized the worst thing about myself and how it's all connected. You'd think that would be a relief because maybe I'm finally in the clear. Instead I feel deeply sad and very guilty.

Listen, I've been "learning from my past" for years now. I could fill this page with all these feelgood facebook quotes I see all the time, but the one that was told to me once and has always stuck with me, Dev, is only a fool trips on what is behind him.

I think a better option is to learn how to not trip in the future by drawing on the past. I think me and you are fundamentally different in this way.

Or, I've been looking at it all wrong this whole time. FML.

I honestly think you are. I think only good can come from thinking things through clearly and rationally.

and this is the same reason I try to develop consensus with you about the rm drama. because I actually respect you and feel like you are a guy worth developing consensus with. I don't even bother with most.

True but how do you move on? You need to find a way to make yourself feel safe again. The simplest example is this. Say you are raped as a kid and basically have ptsd. I am gonna try and make you understand that you are not in such jeopardy as an adult. There is still a risk because people are evil but maybe you can live with once you put it in perspective. Traumatized people often need their model of evil updated too. It's hard for them to comprehend. But it's a good thing to know what people are capable of. It's another way you can protect yourself.

Absolutely. If you have gone through something that traumatic, moving on must be very difficult. Seeking professional help is the way to go. Your thought process around it sounds very logical.

I do what I can. How's your Sunday night going?

meh...how did yours go?

I installed new window locks, and dealt with the kids while my wife went for a run. I'm pretty sure she's having an affair. I also looked at our finances and realise we're worse off than a year ago, and continuing at this rate will mean we're fucked in about 6 months. So, same old usual Sunday night bullshit.

On an unrelated note, do you have a couch I could crash on for a few days?

It's also a non-video podcast but apparently this one has a special bonus if you're watching. Well, not so much special just a reaction to news.

They have two really good episodes of The Comedy Button where they talk about losing your mother that I would recommend to anyone.

Forgot to add this part about his mom.
