It's basically a promotion to taking care of swans. I'll miss my ducks though

I imagine people don't want painters coming into their house to paint nowadays. He's probably limited to outdoor work.
I'm sorry this is happening to you, rudd

Argo you should give the customary two weeks notice.

Why? They pay me garbage and I have no accruals that they can withhold or anything like that. There's also a hiring freeze so they couldn't hire someone to replace me if they wanted to (which they wouldn't anyway). I've had zero job security the whole time I've been there and I'm never going to use anyone there as a reference. And they haven't put together the office schedule for July so I'm not even putting anyone out by forcing a re-arrangement of the schedule.
Staying an extra week just costs me money and inconveniences people at the new job (which I actually care about and want to do well at). I owe my current office nothing and they owe me nothing and that relationship has been clear from the beginning.

There is never a reason to do this if you don't need a reference.

Trag, if I thought I was leaving them up the creek without a paddle by not giving enough notice, I would stay another week. But they'll be fine without me, don't worry

I see the two weeks notice gesture/policy as a courtesy to your coworkers that have to take on the extra load until your position has been replaced.
