Not that there's anything wrong with getting a tattoo at 37, just try to stay away from the tribal armbands and barbed wire and you'll probably be good.

lol, nothing like that. Probably a few lines from a Wendell Berry poem or something.

Probably better to get one in your forties than your twenties.

Probably the best place to post about Hurricane Harvey. Lots of thoughts about houses and people on my mind since the storm hit.

On houses: They're part of our families. If you were lucky enough to grow up with a good family, the house and everything in it means something. It's more than "just stuff." Your mom's yearbook from 1973, your dad's little notebook recording each person/occasion he shared the Glenlivet you and your brother bought him, these are the things that can "never be replaced." Walking into a house that's been lost to a disaster for the first time does actually feel like discovering the dead body of a loved one. Cleaning up afterwards, all the smells, all that sogginess, mold and feces, it all feels like a stain colored cloud is fogging up your home forever. I'm not sure that will ever go away once you've seen all of your "just things" first soaking in a corner of the house and then rotting on a pile by the ditch.

I think this is the trade-off for a life lived well; we attach meaning to things and we lose them one way or another. These things are rich with memories that live on with or without them, but the memory stays fresher longer if you have the thing in your hand. Still, holding on to these things is as futile as cheating death.

There's a fear that even after a familiar house is emptied and restored, it won't be the home anymore. Or worse, it won't be restored at all and then you'll really be untethered from a large chunk of your life thus far. This is where it pays to learn how to not be so sentimental and nostalgic about everything. Live in the now and be ready to evolve and adapt. Surely there's a happy medium there somewhere. The lesson here is that letting go is a life skill that one can achieve only with extreme mental strength. Letting go is a virtue.

On people: I've lived through three major hurricanes. I was in my hometown when Rita hit and my family evacuated together for over a day in the car only to come home to a month of no electricity. I think that experience is actually documented on RM1. Ike hit while I lived in Houston and I stayed, I was fine, and the city wasn't really as bad off as they made it out to be. Lack of power was the big thing with that one, and everyone pulled through. Harvey was a monster that, one way or another, touched everything and everyone within a six hour drive along the coast of the third largest state in America.

Rita brought me closer to my family. Ike brought me closer to my friends. Harvey is bringing me in touch with my community like never before. I have a profound and deep respect for people who volunteer their time, their money and their homes in a time of need. I met a guy today who drove in with a group from Marshall, five hours north of here, just to see what he could do. The same story over and over again from people all over the country over the last week. I've met them at my bar near the GRB shelter, I've met them out in neighborhoods while I too am cleaning up a stranger's home, and I've met them on Facebook while falling down various rabbit holes of help request threads and impromptu Harvey FB groups. This will be remembered as the storm that crowd sourcing rescued us from, and that's because people are actually a hell of a lot better to each other when it really counts.

I guess that's all I have to say about that. Thanks for listening, RM.

Thanks for sharing, WM...

This is a major reason why we are currently pairing our 'stuff' down and expect to be living in an Earthship or some kind of 'tiny home' within the next five years...

Oh, and this will be somewhere FAR away from hurricane country!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, wm. Being so far removed from the disaster (I live in MN) often leaves me wondering what this experience is like for people like you that are dealing with the devastating reality of these storms. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I hope the help keeps coming and the community continues to show the rest of the country how powerful and compassionate we can be when we aren't divisive and divided. This is the true American way. My thoughts are with you all.

It's the worst. The Gawker format is fine for something like Deadspin but doesn't fit AVC at all.
