This sort of meditation is the practice of basically exercising your awareness muscle. There are different kinds of meditation.

I imagine the awareness muscle to be nothing but a pile of flab that can only be poked at , not flexed.

I feel like I'm getting kicked in the awareness flab all day anymore.

As long as I'm clocking the minutes, count on a substantial improvement.

I know what it means. I just hate the word.

Any reason whatsoever?

Mindfulness sounds hippie-ish. Also they kept saying it over and over at that SJW college graduation.

Not a usual book about this kind of thing but interesting nonetheless.

I dunno I read somewhere that around five minutes of silence is about as effective, so I just try to do that. Maybe not making a big deal of it is for the best.

If your mind is running wild it's not really silence.

Like worrying about how I'm sitting or breathing or whatever. It just stresses me out! I could probably give it a try for a few days and see if in wrong though.

Just sit, just breathe. Thats really all you need to do. There are a lot of different meditation techniques and its about finding the one for you. What works for me is just sitting and listening to my breath and feeling my fingers on my knees. Thats it. When my mind starts to race, which it does, i come back to that. 2 minutes. 3 minutes. 10 minutes. It can be stressful but at some point....when you end the time.....i inevitably feel better.

Try the Sam Harris video I posted. If you can get through that try the longer version of that video.

My favorite "Self help" book is Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. He has this exercise that made a big impact on me.

When sitting in meditation - or doing anything for that matter - Close your eyes and ask yourself quietly "What will my next thought be?" and 9.9 times out of 10...for a very brief second...there is nothing there. Absolutely nothing. And it lasts for barely no time at all but it was eye opening for me.

I love it. I come back to that.
