We are thinking about moving to Flagstaff.

How does it compare to Phoenix & Tucson?

It's a wonderful place. Sits at 7K feet with great breweries and restaurants. Tons of running and hiking spots... Coconino National Forest and the AZ Trail and the city maintains a really cool urban trail system even in the winter. 70 minutes to the Grand Canyon and 40 minutes to Sedona.

College town but not overly douchey/hipster like Boulder or other western college towns.

Flag also gets a fair amount of touring musical acts from bands who beeline down to the 40 from Denver to get to L.A. (SLC and Vegas can suck a d*ck.)

I can relate to this thread from my childhood. While now suburbia the area I grew up in was rural. On one side of my house was a cow pasture, a corn field on the other with a small Baptist church next to it and acres of woods behind me.

My first home as a kid was set back in the woods, and me and my friends had the entire forest as our playground. I feel bad for kids who are raised in cul de sacs and the like.

I'm from the middle of nowhere, but there were no mountains or nice scenery. It was mostly just mud and mosquitoes.

Holy fuck, I don't miss mosquitoes or horse-flies.

PHX may be a cultural wasteland, but at least there aren't fucking mosquitoes.

Yeah, that's a great benefit of MT. No serious bug seasons (lots of species get super short hatch seasons, like 1-2 weeks). Bugs are a non-issue here 99% of the time and it is glorious.

But then on the flip side, we have to carry bear spray with us whenever we go on a hike, so... :?:

The houses across from me growing up had a giant cornfield as their backyards, but I lived "in town".

Arcosanti, not far from Flagstaff. Lived here for about a year. Highly recommended.

But seriously, is bear spray a thing that actually works? I have no experience with it.

Yes, and it's like mace for bears -- you'd be shocked at how many people think it's a repellant they are supposed to apply to their bodies, and wind up going to the hospital.

Yikes. Does it have a similar effect on users as mace or pepper spray? Meaning, when you have to spray it at the bear does it also get in your eyes/skin/etc?
